
The Durban University of Technology has recognised Dr Vusumuzi Sibiya as its Alumnus of the Month for April 2026, celebrating his outstanding academic achievements, transformative leadership and contribution to regional economic development.
Through its Advancement and Alumni Relations Unit, DUT acknowledged Dr Sibiya’s commitment to lifelong learning and his role in driving sustainable tourism and investment growth within the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast region.
Dr Sibiya currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of the South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise, where he leads strategic initiatives focused on positioning the region as a leading tourism and investment destination. His work centres on unlocking economic opportunities, attracting investment, supporting business development and ensuring inclusive growth for local communities.
With more than 13 years of experience across the public and private sectors, Dr Sibiya has built a distinguished career in accounting, development economics, finance and investment management. His leadership approach combines academic insight with practical economic development strategies aimed at strengthening the regional economy.
His academic journey has been marked by exceptional achievement and determination. Dr Sibiya obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Management and Governance cum laude, followed by a Master of Business Administration in Economics, a Master of Finance and Investments specialising in econometrics and a PhD in Business Administration. He also recently completed a Master of Social Sciences in Development Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Speaking on the recognition, Dr Sibiya said education continues to play a critical role in shaping effective leadership and sustainable development.
“Academic growth equips leaders with the knowledge, analytical skills and perspective needed to create meaningful impact. Continuous learning has strengthened my ability to contribute towards economic transformation, investment development and community advancement,” he said.
Under his leadership, SCTIE has continued to prioritise sustainable regional development through tourism growth, investment attraction, support for SMMEs and community inclusion within the tourism value chain. Dr Sibiya is also advancing collaborative regional development initiatives linked to the Eastern Seaboard Development and the District Development Model, aimed at unlocking long-term economic opportunities across the province.
DUT said Dr Sibiya’s journey reflects the university’s commitment to developing graduates who lead with purpose, innovation and integrity beyond the classroom.The university further noted that recognising accomplished alumni not only strengthens ties between the institution and its graduates, but also inspires current students to pursue excellence and lifelong learning.
DUT congratulated Dr Sibiya on the achievement and thanked him for continuing to serve as a proud ambassador for the university and the broader alumni community..
