Backsberg Family Wines is proud to announce that The Patriarch Cabernet Franc 2023 has been awarded 97 points and a Platinum Medal at the recent 2026 Decanter World Wine Awards, one of the world’s most respected international wine competitions. The accolade further cements The Patriarch’s reputation as one of South Africa’s benchmark Cabernet Francs and continues a remarkable run of international recognition for the estate.

“To receive Platinum recognition in consecutive years is incredibly rewarding, as it reflects the dedication and care invested in every stage of the winemaking journey,” says Alicia Rechner, Backsberg Winemaker. “From an exceptional Helderberg vineyard site through to the cellar, this recognition belongs to a team whose shared commitment to quality continues to honour the principles on which Backsberg was founded.”

Building on an extraordinary track record, the 2021 vintage was awarded Gold (95 points), followed by Platinum (97 points) for both the 2022 and 2023 vintages. Named in honour of the late Sydney Back, whose vision and unwavering dedication laid the foundations for Backsberg’s enduring family legacy. Crafted to showcase the purest expression of site, each release is defined by elegance, structure and ageing potential.

Judged by an international panel of Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers and leading wine experts, the Decanter World Wine Awards are among the wine industry’s most respected measures of excellence. From a field of nearly 17,000 wines representing 58 countries, only 1.2% were awarded Platinum at this year’s awards. Only eight South African wines achieved this distinction, making Backsberg’s consecutive Platinum medals for The Patriarch a rare accolade that firmly places it among an elite group of wines recognised for their outstanding quality, consistency and global acclaim.

“For us, this latest accolade is more than an international award – it’s a reflection of a century-long commitment to craftsmanship, family values and responsible stewardship. As the winery continues to build on the legacy established more than 100 years ago, The Patriarch remains a fitting tribute to the people, place and passion that have defined Backsberg across generations”, concludes Alicia.
