As South Africa celebrates Heritage Month this September, South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE) is inviting travellers to experience the authentic stories, traditions and landscapes that make the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast one of the country’s most culturally rich destinations.
Home to a unique blend of indigenous heritage, historical landmarks, rural communities and spectacular natural attractions, the KZN South Coast offers visitors an opportunity to immerse themselves in experiences that celebrate the region’s living heritage while supporting local communities.

Visitors can begin their journey at the Ntelezi Msani Heritage Centre in Mthwalume, where exhibitions celebrate the region’s liberation history and cultural legacy. The Nyandezulu Experience offers guided village tours, traditional Zulu dance performances and breathtaking views of the majestic Nyandezulu Waterfall, providing an authentic cultural encounter.
Adventure enthusiasts can explore the KwaNzimakwe Multi-Trail, featuring hiking, mountain biking and 4×4 routes through scenic landscapes steeped in local history. At the KwaXolo Adventure Experience, visitors can discover ancient San rock art hidden within the KwaXolo Caves, gaining insight into one of Southern Africa’s earliest inhabitants.
History continues along the coastline at the legendary Nightingale and São João shipwreck sites near Port Edward, where fascinating stories of maritime exploration and survival remain etched into the coastline.
For those seeking authentic community experiences, Gamalakhe offers scenic hiking trails, the vibrant Tin Town, the lively Kasfied experience and delicious traditional shisanyama, providing visitors with a true taste of township culture.
Nature lovers can reconnect with the outdoors along the tranquil Umzumbe River Trail and the picturesque Weza Hiking Trail, both showcasing the region’s indigenous forests, diverse birdlife and breathtaking scenery.
Completing the Heritage Month experience is the KwaNdwalane Cultural Experience, situated between Port Shepstone and Paddock. Visitors can explore either the Nyandezulu or Madakane routes, both leading to the spectacular 80-metre waterfall while offering meaningful interactions with the local community and showcasing the area’s mountains, forests and rivers.
